What is a PoE switch?
A network switch that sends power along with data on each network cable (Power over Ethernet), so IP cameras need no separate adapter or socket.
How many cameras can one PoE switch power?
As many as it has PoE ports, as long as the total power stays within its PoE budget: for example 48 W for the CP Plus 4-port model and 300 W for the 16 and 24-port models on this page.
How far can a camera be from the switch?
Up to about 100 m of network cable normally. Some switches here have an extended mode up to 250 m at lower speed; beyond that we add another switch or an extender.
Do I need a gigabit switch?
For a few 2MP or 4MP cameras, a 10/100 switch is fine. For many 4K cameras or a large NVR, gigabit ports or uplinks avoid dropped frames.
Managed or unmanaged?
Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play and suit most homes, shops and offices. Managed switches add VLANs, QoS and link redundancy for large factory and campus networks.
Do I need a switch if my NVR has PoE ports?
Not for those cameras: an NVR with PoE ports powers them directly. A switch is added when you have more cameras than the NVR's PoE ports.
